The word “TAWASHI” means that a stuff bundled together.
Our products are completely made by hand work of traditional craftsman SAGARA brothers in Tokyo. They have kept supply the TAWASHI for 60 years and they are last TAWASHI craftsman in Tokyo.
Feature of our TAWASHI is unique shape like a letter “J” designed for skin brushing in bath time.

General materials of tawashi are hemp palm, coconut palm, and sisal hemp.
the History of TAWASHI
The first Tawashi was invented around the beginning of 20th century.
It was Invented for daily use such as scraping the mud from vegetables and gardening tools.
Since it was useful, Tawashi soon became one of the most general tools in kitchen and garden.
The material windmill palm fiber had been utilized from long before the Tawashi invention.
Sei Shonagon, who wrote “Makura no Soshi” (The Pillow Book), praises hemp palm in her book.
There are some records that people used the fiber as ropes and brooms on a daily basis before Edo period in Japan.
The advantage of this material is that it is soft, flexible and durable.
